National Happiness Week – What makes you happy? Is it a choice?

Happiness, such a simple word, but it is also a powerful one. I remember a song in the movie Scrooge, which states….

They say happiness is a thing you can’t see, a thing you can’t touch, I disagree.

Happiness is whatever you want it to be.”

I too disagree. As this is National Happiness Week I thought it would be nice to really think about what that word means to me and what it means for others.

Today I woke up, tired as always, as you get older you don’t sleep as well. Anyway, that’s a whole other blog. I forced myself to get up and exercise; things started to look up. I took my shower and got dress, feeling still better then opened up the to-do list for the day. As I accomplished one thing after another, I realized I was smiling and in a really good mood. What was different today? I don’t know, but I think the sunshine, the exercise, letting a gentleman to cut in front of me at the grocery store (he only had one item), giving an older woman my cart as she was walking into the store, complementing a stranger on the great color of their car. I spent an hour on a zoom call with new clients (who I adore). All these things made me happy and my to-do list was getting ta-done.

In thinking about happiness, I don’t think it needs to be this big thing that you aspire to, nor does it need to be a New Years Resolution (I am going to be happy this year). I think it is a simple frame of mind. You need to CHOOSE to be happy. As you do nice things for people and receive a simple thank you or just a smile – that makes you happy. I may not be the weight that makes me happy; or make the money I aspire too. That’s OK because I know that if I focus, work hard and move toward my vision; I will achieve those things. But those things aren’t going to bring me happiness. So, I am Choosing To Be Happy. Some days may be harder than others, but everyday I am going to get up and make that choice.

All you need to do to be happy, is to do kind things for yourself and for others. When those negative nellies start getting in your head; push them out and choose to think positive. Put out a little happiness and so much happiness will be returned.

I read last night that Happiness is Finding Someone to Love; Doing Something You Love and Having Something to Look Forward Too. This I totally agree with. I have that someone to love, I am doing something I love and 2019 has so much to look forward too.

This week make it your goal to do one thing nice every day; write it in your journal and celebrate each one. Whether it is for yourself or for others; whether it is noticed or not; smile and think about what you just did. I believe you will want to do more nice things and those smiles will become contagious.
